BECK HESSION WAND
Mick Beck (t/sax, bassoon, whistles), Matt Wand (electronics), Paul Hession (drums)
Astounding what they can do with a wand, a faggot, and several other beaters!
The trio brings “music where fervent recklessness and stopstart swing make you relish the most barbaric and widely sourced cacophony” (The Wire issue 219). Each member of the trio brings wide experience and individualism which fuse into seething performances: unresolved menace, comedy of relief, itchy scratchy kitty catty doggerel monk fish. Oh no not bean curd, more like tequila! This is a fantosophical trio.

For more than 30 years the Wuppertal saxophonist Hans Peter Hiby and the English percussionist Paul Hession have been working together in various formations (from the duo to the quartet) in the area of free jazz and European improvisational music. Her music has led her through many European countries.
The complex structures of their improvisations reveal a high degree of sensitivity and narrative expression in all explosive dynamics. It is important for them not to be constrained by a set of templates, in order to give free expression to their musical expression and feelings.
In the second part of the concert evening the Wuppertaler violinist Christoph Irmer will join the Hiby-Hession-Duo as a trio.

The Ragging of Time celebrates 100 years of jazz history in a dizzying musical kaleidoscope that spirals from New Orleans to contemporary free jazz, taking in everything that lies between. In a work originally commissioned by the Marsden Jazz Festival, Simon Fell constructs time-tunnels between earlier periods in the history of jazz and the most recent developments in improvisation and instrumental abstraction. For Time Unwrapped, he presents a new quintet version of this dazzling jazz panorama.
